Courses Available

All courses take place in the UFARA computer lab, which can be accessed through the Community Centre’s front office, unless otherwise advised.

  • Fees quoted are for members (in brackets are for non-members) which include the cost of manuals.
  • A member who enrols in more than one course will be entitled to a 10% discount off the tuition fee for the second and third course.
  • If a member enlists 3 or more students to do the same course then that member would do his/her course free of charge.
  • Long course (a long course is defined as being three or more lessons in duration) manuals are now available to members (with the exception of ‘Train the Trainer’) for $30 as a self-paced module; all required files are included. These must be ordered and pre-paid and can be collected the following club activity.
  • It pays to belong, member receive a 50% discount on training offered by the Illawarra
    Computer Enthusiasts.

ACCESS I
(Database) – Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)
Dates: Monday 11,18,25 October & 1 November 2010, 9:30 am

Lesson 1 – table building.
Lesson 2 – forms and data entering.
Lesson 3 – analysing data using queries.
Lesson 4 – reports

ACCESS II (Database) – Costs (One-On-One): $48 ($96) 4 x 2 hrs = 8 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

Prerequisite – You must have completed ACCESS I and it continues to a more advanced level.

The following topics will be covered.
Lesson 1 – Use of various field types in table and table relationships.
Lesson 2 – Working with queries including using more than one table and various types of query
Lesson 3 – Creating forms and reports in design view.
Lesson 4 – Macros

BURNING CDs USING NERO – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

  • Copying from one disc to another.

COMPUTER BASICS
– Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

This course provides a solid foundation in basic computer concepts and the essentials of hardware, software, operating systems, the Internet and more.

CREATE-A-CARD
(Greeting cards) – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs

You will be taught how to create greeting cards using the American Create-A-Card program.

DIGITAL MEDIA
– Costs: $23 ($41), 3 x 2 hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

This course covers all aspects of digital media except digital movie making; beginning with on how to manage digital music, the course moves on to converting analogue music (such as tapes and vinyl LPs) to CDs.

MEDIA PLAYER – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

Note: You will need to bring with you

EASY WEB
– Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs

This course shows how to make a simple website quickly and easily without any HTML coding required.

  • Making a more customisable site using webs.com
  • Other options for different types of websites

USING EXCEL I (Spreadsheet) – Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

This course introduces the basic ideas people need to know about how to use a spreadsheet. Concepts include entering and editing text data, entering and editing numerical data, formatting text and numerical data, sorting data, using sample formulae and creating graphs.

USING EXCEL II
(Spreadsheet) – Costs (One-On-One): $36 ($72) 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

This course assumes that you have completed EXCEL I or already have a good knowledge of spreadsheet basics.

PRINTING OPTIONS IN EXCEL

FACEBOOK

This course is an introduction to Facebook for those that haven't used it before and are thinking of taking the plunge or those who have just started and want to know a little more.

USING THE INTERNET – Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

Students learn about the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Webb, about viruses and computer protection, about searching techniques, about search engines such as Google.
In Session 2 is devoted to using e-mail programs. Since our computers are on a broadband connection, fast Internet access is a feature of the course.

SENDING & RECEIVING E-MAILS WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

  • How to attach document or pictures
  • How to send an e-mail to multiple recipients
  • How to add contacts to your address book

PICASA (Photo Editing) – Costs: $11 ($17) 1 x 2 hrs

This course will cover how to remove red eye, crop photos, rise or lower brightness and contrast, transform coloured photos to B&W or sepia, and add numerous special effects such as blurring and background tinting.

PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS (Photo Editing) – Costs: $29 ($53), 4 x 2 hrs = 8 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

What you will learn:

  • Fixing over and under exposed images
  • Rotating and straightening photos
  • Removing Red Eye and skin blemishes
  • Photomerge - give everyone in a group shot their best face. Take a few shots of a group, then make a composite photo using everyone's best face. Great when someone blinks!
  • Making photo collages/composites that look real - add a holiday background, change jewellery and more!The course will mainly concentrate on fixing flaws in your photos, e.g. Red-eye, crooked horizon; the benefits of layers, special effects to name a few.

PHOTOSTORY 3 (Creating your own “videos”) – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

Photo Story helps you create exciting video stories by adding panning and zooming effects to your pictures. Use Photo Story to record narration for your pictures, add titles and background music to your story. You can also share your story
in a variety of ways.

INTRODUCTION TO POWERPOINT (Presentation) – Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60) Dates: TBA

You will be introduced to the features of Power Point, creating and saving a presentation, using a design template, inserting text and graphics, creating a folder to store a presentation, previewing and printing a presentation.

INTRODUCTION TO PUBLISHER
(Desktop Publishing) – Costs: $29 ($53), 4 x 2 hrs = 8hrs, Self paced module:$30 ($60)

You must be competent in word processing to do the course.
You will be introduced to the features of Microsoft Publisher, and learn skills that enable you to create a wide
variety of publications, including newsletters, brochures and flyers and stationery.

TRAIN THE TRAINER – Costs: Free ($41), 3 x 2 hrs = 6 hrs

This course is for people who wish to become volunteer trainers for their club. It assumes a basic knowledge of several programs, and delves into teaching techniques. It is mainly about "How to Teach" rather than "What to Teach".

WORD I (Word Processing) – Costs: $23 ($41), 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

This 4 week course is part one of a two stage course and introduces participants to the basics of word processing. Learn how to the appearance of text by using italics, bold and underlining; by changing the
font and size. Then advance to formatting text, using margins, bulleting, and auto numbering.
Spelling and grammar are also covered as are filing and editing.

WORD II (Word Processing) – Costs (One-On-One): $36 ($72) 4 x 1 ½ hrs = 6 hrs, Self paced module: $30 ($60)

Also 4 weeks in length, this course takes the user to the more advanced aspects of word processing: importing graphics such as clip art and pictures; writing in columns; designing a 3-fold pamphlet; using frames and tables; page numbering and headers or footers; word art. Mail merge is not covered.

CREATING LABELS (Word Processing) – Costs: $11 ($17),1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

This course will show you all the tips and tricks for creating small numbers of professional labels with Microsoft Word.

CREATING ENVELOPES (Word Processing) – Costs: $11 ($17),1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

This course will show you all the tips and tricks for creating small numbers of professional envelopes with Microsoft Word.

CREATING & FORMATTING TABLES (Word Processing) – Costs: $11 ($17), 1 x 2 hrs = 2 hrs

You will receive a full refund if the course is fully booked or cancelled.

A minimum of 3 enrolments must be received before a course commences (One-On-One training excepted)

All fees must be paid on enrolment and are not refundable except in very extenuating circumstances to be dealt with by committee on a case by case basis.

Students must acknowledge to the e-mail sent to them before a course commences. Students are warned that failure to respond could jeopardise the course starting. Those without an e-mail address will be contacted by phone.

The confirmation should be received 14 days before the starting date of a course. All courses are given a clear notice of the starting date and failure to turn up will result in forfeiture of fees paid. This may be appealed in writing to the committee.
